If you are running a webserver and using it to save Matplotlib make sure to set the backend to a non-interactive one (matplotlib.use('agg') or matplotlib.pyplot.switch_backend('Agg')) so that your server does not try to create (and then destroy) GUI windows that will never be seen (or if they are will be more of a nuisance).

If you didn't install tk in your python then you can not use the tk backend.

This is what I did on Windows to make pyplot work pip uninstall matplotlib
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
pip install matplotlib 

matplotlib error import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

Your installation is broken reinstalling mpl via conda


If this does not work try the mpl user mailing list (matplotlib-users@python.org)
